What Is the Nike Playground Kobe Bryant BS2049-014?

The Nike Playground Kobe Bryant BS2049-014 is an outdoor basketball from Nike with a rubber cover and Kobe Bryant’s signature logo used as an all-over grip pattern. It is a size 7 ball in a black, University Gold, and purple colorway, with Thailand listed as the country of origin.

BS2049-014 is the model and manufacturer part number. Use it when you search stores, because Nike sells several Kobe basketballs and the names look similar. The UPC listed on Amazon is 887791810601.

The “Playground” name tells you the purpose. This is the tough, everyday ball for blacktop, driveway, and park courts rather than a polished indoor game ball.

Nike Playground Kobe Bryant Basketball Specs

Here are the specifications as listed on the Amazon product page. Retailers sometimes round figures, so check the packaging if exact numbers matter to you.

A quick note on size. Size 7 is the standard full-size ball used by adult players. If a younger player is using it, a smaller size is usually easier to handle.

What Makes the Kobe Logo Grip Pattern Special?

Instead of the classic channel lines you see on most basketballs, this ball repeats Kobe Bryant’s signature logo across the entire surface. It works as decoration and as the textured grip pattern at the same time.

That is the main selling point. You get a ball that looks like a tribute and feels like a playground workhorse. If you want to understand the symbol itself, our guide to the Kobe Bryant Mamba logo explains what the sheath means and how it was born.

One honest limit here. Nike’s listing describes the pattern but does not publish grip testing data, so we cannot give you a measured grip score. Judge it by hand when you can.

Is the Nike Playground Kobe Bryant Ball for Indoor or Outdoor Use?

It is made for outdoor use. The listing recommends outdoor play and describes a durable rubber ball ideal for outdoor courts.

Rubber covers handle rough surfaces like asphalt and concrete better than most other ball covers. That is why playground balls are almost always rubber.

Indoors, a rubber ball can feel different from the leather or composite balls used on hardwood. You can still shoot around with it in a gym, but serious indoor league play is better served by a dedicated indoor ball.

Who Should Buy This Ball?

This ball fits three kinds of buyers.

Outdoor players. If you play on blacktop most weeks, a rubber ball with a bold design is a practical pick.

Kobe fans. The all-over logo and Lakers inspired colors make it a fun way to carry the legend onto the court.

Gift buyers. A Kobe branded ball is an easy gift for a hoops fan who already has the jerseys and posters.

It is not the best fit if you want a signed collectible or an investment piece. For that, look at Kobe Bryant signed basketballs instead. A Playground ball is a product meant to be used.

How Does It Compare With Other Types of Basketballs?

Here is how a rubber outdoor ball like this one generally compares with other common ball types.

How Much Does the Nike Playground Kobe Bryant Basketball Cost?

The Amazon listing shows $49.95. Amazon also advertised a gift card offer for new Amazon Visa applicants at the time of writing. Prices and promotions change, so confirm the current price on the product page before you buy.

You can compare it with the same ball at other retailers. Dick’s Sporting Goods and Team Town Sports both list Kobe Playground basketballs, and Nike lists its own Kobe Playground ball on its website. Model numbers and colors can differ between stores, so match BS2049-014 before you order.

What Do Customers Say About It?

The Amazon listing shows a 5.0 out of 5 rating from 2 reviews. It also ranked #622 in Basketballs and #287,851 in Sports & Outdoors at the time of writing.

That is a very small sample, so treat it as a friendly early signal and not proof of long term durability. Nike’s own product page for the Kobe Playground ball has a separate review section worth reading before you decide. Rankings move daily, so these numbers will change.

How to Choose and Buy the Right Ball

Use this simple path to decide.

1. Decide where you will play. Outdoors points to this ball. Indoors points to a leather or composite ball.
2. Confirm the size. You want size 7 for adult full size play.
3. Match the model number BS2049-014 and the black, gold, and purple colorway.
4. Compare the price across a few trusted stores.
5. Buy from a reputable seller and check the packaging on arrival.

How to Care for a Rubber Outdoor Basketball

A little care keeps the pattern sharp and the ball bouncing true.

1. Wipe it down with a damp cloth after dirty sessions.
2. Skip harsh chemicals, which can dull the surface.
3. Keep it out of hot cars and direct sun for long periods.
4. Store it with moderate air pressure instead of overinflated.
5. Rotate it with a second ball if you play daily.

Use a hand pump with a pressure gauge if you have one. Match the pressure range printed near the ball’s valve.

Common Mistakes Buyers Make

• Expecting a collectible. This is a playable ball, not a signed or limited memorabilia piece.
• Using it as an indoor game ball. Rubber is made for outdoor wear.
• Ignoring the model number. Nike sells several Kobe basketballs, so BS2049-014 is the number to match.
• Buying the wrong size. Size 7 is full size, which may be too big for younger players.

FAQs
